Even with  20/20 eyesight  a student may not possess all the visual abilities needed for learning. Visual skills play an important role in information gathering. Visual perceptual  skills are critical in processing and remembering the information gathered.  Students with poor or undeveloped visual skills have difficulty focusing and keeping their eyes on the page. They may not report blurriness or headaches,  but exhibit behavior and learning problems instead.   They pass their school eye screenings and other exams because they have 20/20 and healthy eyes.

Poor tracking , eye teaming, sustained focus problems, and other visual skills difficulties may be overlooked in pediatric exams and eye screenings because they do not relate to the health of the eye but to the function of vision. Tracking ,Visual discrimination and Form Constancy, Visual closure, Visual memory, Visual auditory integration, Visual motor integration and Visual information processing skills  are not usually evaluated in medical health exams or school screenings. These skills are often not evaluated by the school or psychologists until the student has already been behind enough in academic work to warrant testing. This may be 2 years or more and your student may have lost serious ground in their education by that time. Most special education programs and traditional tutoring programs do not work directly on these crucial skills needed for learning even when testing reveals weak areas. These skill however are critical to learning.

Visual/ Perceptual Skills Training  can improve  these skills necessary for academic achievement !
